Cuckoos Nest, Cuckoo Book

When I started reading the book One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, I had an open mind about tried to have an open mind about it. As they say you can't judge a book by its cover, and in this case I am glad that I didn't. The cover is full of quotes praising the book saying things such as: "Brilliant," "Powerful," "A smashing achievement," and "Impressive." But soon after reading it I did not think that this book was "Brilliant," or "Powerful," I, in fact, thought that this book, titled rather appropriately, is cuckoo.
The novel is not just crazy, I agree that it has several misogynistic and racist qualities to it. Any mention in the book of a woman so far has been negative. One of the main characters Nurse Ratched is the vilain of the story and others in the ward have had negative experiences with females in their life. The book is also somewhat racist because it portrays African-Americans in a negative, and inferior position. These "Black boys" in the story are seen as evil minions of the nurse. Truly one cannot judge a book by its cover, when its cover is full of lies.

I agree with Travis to a certain extent. I dont think the cover is full of lies, i think that he didnt take the time period into account or the fact that there had never really been a book of this kind out for people to read. I do agree that this book is crazy, but it is set in a mental institution, so what else would you expect. also i dont think that we should judge the comments on the cover of the book until we are done reading the book. Some books have a slow start or a confusing middle, but the end of some books, which is the part of the book that you take away with you as your last taste can sometimes be a wonderful surprise ending to a book that you thought up until that point was dull. so i think travis should hold his views on the book as a whole until we are done reading it.

Unlike Travis, i had a very closed mind to this book. Right off the bat when i heard that we were going to be reading about mental patients in a mental Institution i was very unhappy. My grandfather who is very mentally ill was perhaps the reason for why i closed my self to this book in the beggining. After awhile though as i started getting a feel of the characters i began caring for some of them, and disliking some of the other. But i started getting into it and realizing that the quotes on the cover were, in my opinion, right. Yes, the book has a couple misogynistic and racist qualities to it however i think this book is definitely brilliant and powerful in its own cuckoo way.

I also agree with Travis to a certain extent. Yes, the book is "cuckoo" but lets not forget the book is based in a mental institution. I agree with the fact that the book portrayed women as evil and cold but I don't think that the author was being racist in any way. It seems like when anyone portrays a minority in a negative way, Travis finds that person being racist. It is what it is and thats just what the author thought the character should be like. Like Elizabeth said, I think that Travis should finish reading the book before he can judge it.
