Nikes swoosh sign to the advertisement industry is like the fish or the cross to christianity, thats how much meaning it holds! After reading Swoosh! by Read Mercer Schuchardt i realized that a small logo, that once cost $35 to create is much more powerful than most people could ever be. Nike's Swoosh logo is probably one of the most recongized logos in the world.
The logo never has to be transalated. like Schuchardt says "the Swoosh transcends language". The fact that i had to capitalize the word Swoosh in this blog just shows you how much Nike's logo controls. Even through the exploitation of people, the Nike Swoosh continues its advertisment legacy.

I agreed with all of the good points Allie made about Nike's Swoosh symbol. I feel like Nike definately started a trend throughout brands and set the standards high. There are actually many brands i can think of that sometimes only advertise using their symbol as a universal code for everyone to understand and relate to. Even Verizon Wireless' symbol of the pin dropping in a swoosh tye motion shows how Nike really did start a trend in the advertising world.
There are many high end clothing brands that i know of that have one common logo on most of their products and clothing that can be spotted so that people will know they are wearing a certain brand. For example the "J" zippers on Juicy Couture's products, The two intertwined "C"s on Chanel's products and also Under Armour's two intertwined "U"s that form a U and A. these are just a few of labels that followed suit with Nike's trademark Swoosh.
The Nike Swoosh is truly a symbol that transcends language, religion and culture. The name of Nike came from the Greek goddess of victory Nike and the swoosh symbol has become a symbol of victory, and dominance. Nike operates throughout the world and hires over 30,000 workers.
Though the swoosh stands for dominance and a larger than life company, it also stands for human rights violations. Nike has admitted to hiring children in third world countries to make their shoes. The hiring of these children, who have to work in terrible conditions, has helped Nike to keep its costs lower. They can charge these workers little to nothing and make a huge profit on their shoes. It is a shame that the swoosh cannot just stand for sports and the love of the game, it is associated with greed and shady activities.
I never thought about it but Nike's Swoosh is such a brilliant symbol that it speaks for itself. And like Elizabeth said, it definitely set standards high and started a trend. A couple great and well known symbols are the man on the horse for Ralph Lauren, the alligatore for Lacoste, the navy blue, white and red smbol for Tommy Hilfiger, the connected 'L' and 'V' for Louis Vuitton, the two connected 'Cs' for Chanel...etc... There are soooo many symbols that transcend language, religion and culture. All you have to do is see it and you instantly know who its from.
I agree that the Nike Swoosh is one of the most recognized symbols in the world. It's on everything that has to do with sports. I think the symbol being on everything is part of the reason that so many people want to buy Nike products. When kids see their favorite baseball player wearing Nike shoes, they are going to beg their parents to buy them some too.
